Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences University of Zagreb (FHSS) is the largest higher education institution in Croatia which carries out research activities and executes university programs in the field of humanities and social sciences, as well as a significant cultural institution with a great impact on Croatian culture and society. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is part of the University of Zagreb, the oldest university in Croatia and one of the oldest universities in Europe.All activities of the FHSS enhance the development of personality and promote human rights and fundamental freedoms. FHSS is organized trough departments (23) and chairs (125).

With a tradition of 150 years, the social role, importance and reputation of the Faculty are all a result of the commitment and dedication of its teaching staff and employees, as well as the quality and perspectives of its students.

STUDY PROGRAMS

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers 92 university study programs, of which 44 are undergraduate, 47 graduate and 1 integrated undergraduate and graduate study programe. At the undergraduate level, the Faculty offers 10 single major and 34 double major study programmes, which are designed as general studies; they last for six or eight semesters, during which students acquire a minimum of 60 ECTS points in one year and get the knowledge necessary to continue their higher education at the graduate level.

The graduate study programmes are of a specialised nature and last two or four semesters, providing comprehensive education necessary for a particular profession. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers 12 single and 35 double major graduate programmes. All study programmes offered at the undergraduate level can be studied at the graduate level either as single or double majors. Sections are based on the tradition of previous study programmes, scientific and institutional capacities and the interests of students, as well as the needs of society and the market demand for experts in humanities and social sciences.

Postgraduate programmes are divided into specialist and doctoral programmes: the former last for one or two years and result in the academic degree of University Specialist, while the latter last for three years and result in the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Curricula are based on interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinary, and a wide range of students are able to choose studies according to their interests and needs. The Faculty offers 15 university postgraduate (doctoral) programmes and 6 postgraduate specialised study programmes.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has a long tradition in international cooperation and internationalization is a strategic issue of the development with an aim to remain the leading higher education institution in Croatia supporting and holding the academic traditions and promoting the Croatian culture and science with the ongoing goal for further development. FHSS is proud to persistently work on strengthening its international cooperation with individual and institutional efforts considering it to be the main initiator of its expansion. International cooperation in education and research is in constant expansion due to persistent efforts to increase the number and quality of mobility of students, staff, etc. Developing diversity and widening participation of students and staff is a key issue of the modernization of FHSS.

International cooperation refers to international activities that develop international relations with partner institutions in the world, encouraging the mobility of students, teachers and non-teaching staff and participation in international programs and projects in the field of higher education. International activities are established and implemented by the Council of the Faculty, dean, vice-deans, ECTS coordinators, Office for International Cooperation and our staff and students.

Faculty has over 60 bilateral agreements signed with our partner universities from Europe, North and South America, Australia and Asia. These bilateral agreements regulate different types of cooperation, such as exchange of scholars and students, work on subjects and projects of common interest, joint publications, exchange of information and other activities in order to improve the academic and scientific cooperation.

In the academic year 2011/12 Croatia became a full member of the Life Long Program and since then FHSS actively participates in Erasmus+ programme.  During the previous Erasmus+ program we had more than 300 Erasmus+ agreements with institutions from the Program countries, but also agreements (on University level) with Partner Countries from all over the World.  After the revision and evaluation, Faculty now has more than 80 Erasmus+ partner universities.

Mobility of staff and students is organized trough formal exchange programs (Erasmus+, CEEPUS, etc.) and also applying for funds of the University of Zagreb, Ministry of Science and Education through foundations (Fulbright, Humboldt, etc), associations, etc.

RESEARCH

Research Strategy of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

In addition to holding classes, Faculty conducts research activities in special scientific areas. Research studies have been very successful and have resulted in a striking number of new scientific and research projects, an enormous number of scientific papers published in a variety of publications, international and national journals as well, and included in global databases, but also in special editions of books of proceedings, publications, books, textbooks and handbooks.

The research activities in the field of social sciences included research activities in the area of information and communication sciences, sociology, psychology and pedagogy. The field of humanities was focused on research activities in the areas of philosophy, linguistics, history, art history, archaeology, ethnology and cultural anthropology, and many philological groups.

The area of philology includes a number of branches researched and taught at the FHSS through special research projects within their respective departments, which are as follows: classical philology, Croatian language and literature, South, East and West Slavic languages and literature, French language and literature, Italian language and literature, German language and literature, English language and literature with Scandinavian languages and literature, Indology and Far East studies with the chairs of Indology, Chinese and Japanese studies, Hungarian, Turkish and Judaic studies with their respective chairs and phonetics.

The scientific activities contribute to teaching as teachers integrate the latest knowledge from the methodology applied and up-to-date topics of their interest into teaching, as well as the results of their research activities. A considerable number of students are involved in preparation and implementation of research studies, which helps them increase their competences. Owing to projects it was possible to employ junior researchers, most gifted and best-in-class young people, who contributed not only to specific projects for which they had been recruited but also to the FHSS as a whole which has a long tradition of the development of young researchers, which is more than a century old. All departments are concerned with young researchers and primarily represent a place where they can learn and acquire skills and competences for scientific activities as an imperative springboard for their further engagement in research and teaching activities and professional development. In some scientific aspects in the field of humanities and social sciences it can be safely said that the FHSS is a point of reference at the European level.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS at the Faculty

TRANSFER OF KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The activities carried out to modernize programs and communication with the theoretical and artistic contemporariness represent the most important contribution to the intellectual transfer in the society. It helps the FHSS students become more qualified to work in many professions which is why the FHSS works on understanding of the cultural and aesthetic platforms shared with Europe.

The teaching-oriented study directly transfers knowledge to the society by education of teachers who work in public schools, development of testing materials for the national high school graduation exam in foreign languages, lectures and workshops held within the framework of training for pre-school teachers. The research activities concerning interpreting/translation studies transfer knowledge to the society and economy by education of interpreters/translators who work for public institutions (in Croatia and abroad), national and international companies, are engaged in (simultaneous and consecutive) conference interpreting in Croatia and in EU institutions. The research activities in the studies of literature and linguistics directly transfer knowledge and skills to the society and culture by education of experts who work for cultural institutions and the media (in Croatia and abroad).

The results of scientific activities, especially in research-oriented studies, contribute to teaching both methodologically and content-wise. The scientific activities contribute to the society and economy to the extent in which the Croatian society and economy are integrated into the processes of globalization.

The scientific activities are also crucial to provide good execution of classes which follow the state-of-the-art concepts in specific scientific areas. They guarantee better intellectual transfer of scientific achievements and at the same time provide better and more competitive education of the FHSS human resources and students. The scientific activities contribute to scientific profiling of the FHSS as an institution and facilitate integration of the FHSS researchers and students into international projects.

The field research with students, as a part of the FHSS scientific activities, but also of field practice of students, which is completely integrated into the FHSS teaching activity, constitutes one of the important elements of study programs at relevant departments to contemporary research into pedagogy, psychology, sociology and information sciences.
